Rug size guide
A rug that is too small makes a room look smaller. It is the most common mistake we see, and the easiest to avoid. Here is how we choose a size, room by room.
The one rule that works everywhere
Choose the largest rug the room can take, then leave 20 to 40 cm of floor visible between the rug and the walls. A rug should hold the furniture together, not float in the middle of it.
Living room
We have two standard sizes for a living room. The front legs of the sofa rest on the rug: that is what ties a seating area together.
- Size M, 250 × 150 cm: for a sofa and a coffee table. See size M
- Size L, 300 × 200 cm: for a sofa, a coffee table and armchairs. See size L
For a very large living room or an open space, go for size XL or XXL. See size XL · See size XXL

Bed
room
- Size M, the most common choice: placed in front of the bed, so that your feet land on wool in the morning. See size M
- Size S: small rugs, usually placed at the foot of the bed or beside it. See size S
Dining room
A flat-woven rug is not a must: a long-pile rug works just as well under a table. Count at least 300 × 200 cm, so the chairs stay on the rug even when you pull them back. See size L · See our kilims
Hallway
A runner should leave 10 to 15 cm of floor on each side, and stop before the doors.
Try it before you decide
Mark the size on your floor with masking tape and live with it for a day. Or let us bring the rug to you: in Brussels and around, we come to your home so you can see it in your space, free of charge. Write to us at info@yaas.be.
